Police at Kajjansi have arrested a white foreigner suspected of planting fake bomb threats, along with a boda-boda rider, after two institutions at Quality Supermarket in Lubowa were targeted. The affected places were Absa Bank and Guild Forex Bureau, both located along Entebbe Road.
The suspects are accused of delivering letters that claimed a pipe bomb had been placed at the entrances. The letters demanded a ransom of more than 630 million shillings, broken down into 120,000 US dollars, 20,000 British pounds, 20,000 euros, and 30 million shillings.
Investigations showed that the boda rider, identified as 30-year-old Madi Muteta, was given 20,000 shillings by the foreigner to deliver the envelopes. He later told police that he believed it was a simple delivery and did not know what the envelopes contained.
When staff at the two institutions opened the envelopes, they discovered the threats, prompting police to cordon off the scene and deploy the bomb squad. After a full check, it was confirmed that no explosives had been planted.
CCTV footage from the supermarket area helped police track the vehicle used by the foreign suspect, which was identified as UAV 462V. This led to the arrest of both suspects.
Although the threats turned out to be a hoax, police are continuing investigations to find out the motive behind the act.
