Four Remanded Over Savage Mob Attack That Claimed Life of Uganda Rugby Cranes Player

    By OnionJune 13, 2026

Four men have been remanded by court in connection with the killing of Uganda Rugby Cranes player Sydney Gongodyo, as investigations into the violent mob attack continue and police pursue additional suspects.

The accused, Obed Mugwisa, Elly Mondoni, Joseph Owino, and Henry Kabugo, appeared before the Kampala City Hall Court where they were formally charged with murder and sent to Luzira Prison. Court heard that the suspects are linked to a mob incident that took place on June 5, 2026, in Kampala, which led to the death of the national rugby player after he was attacked by a crowd.

Prosecutors told court that investigations are still ongoing and that more suspects believed to have taken part in the attack are still being tracked down. The magistrate did not take plea because murder is a capital offence that falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

The suspects were remanded until June 23, 2026, when the case will return for mention as police continue gathering evidence, including witness statements and exhibits connected to the incident. Authorities also confirmed that earlier arrests helped investigators recover key items allegedly used during the attack.

The death of Gongodyo, a 27-year-old player for the Uganda Rugby Cranes and Stanbic Black Pirates Rugby Club, has triggered widespread outrage and renewed concern over mob justice in Uganda, with calls from leaders and sports figures for stronger enforcement and public awareness.

Police say investigations are ongoing and more arrests are expected as efforts continue to ensure all those involved are identified and brought before court, while the rugby community mourns the loss of one of its rising stars.
