At least 14 people have lost their lives and 28 others sustained injuries following a devastating road accident involving a passenger bus and a trailer along the Kampala–Gulu Highway.
The fatal collision happened on the night of Tuesday, July 7, at around 9:34pm in Bobi Trading Centre, according to traffic police.
Police spokesperson Michael Kananura said the crash involved an Isuzu bus, registration number UBE 110H, operated by OPIT Travellers Company, and a Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer, registration numbers KBS 564D and ZE 7948.
Initial findings suggest the bus driver was travelling at high speed when he attempted to avoid a pedestrian crossing the road. The sudden maneuver reportedly caused the driver to lose control before the bus slammed head-on into the oncoming trailer.
The impact left 14 people dead at the scene, while 28 others suffered injuries of varying severity.
Emergency responders and police officers rushed to the scene, where the injured were rescued and transported to nearby health facilities for treatment. Authorities also worked through the night to clear the wreckage and restore traffic flow along the busy highway.
Police have launched investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
Kananura urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly when driving at night, noting that reduced visibility increases the risk of serious accidents.
He advised drivers to obey speed limits, remain vigilant in trading centres where pedestrians frequently cross the road, and maintain speeds that allow them to react safely to unexpected situations.
Police said additional information will be released as investigations progress.
