Police in Rukungiri Municipality have arrested a housemaid and a man after they were allegedly found together inside her employer’s home in Katungu Cell, Kigaaga Ward, Southern Division.
The suspects, identified as Kesande Janet, a maid from Kanungu District, and Mujuni Bright, a resident of Ruhinda Sub-county, were reportedly discovered inside the house of businessman Namara Ivan, also known as Kikoni, at around 10:30 a.m. on Friday.
Following the incident, the pair were handed over to officers at Rukungiri Central Police Station (CPS), where they were arrested and booked on allegations of trespassing under Reference Number 41/26/06/2026. The complaint was filed by Namara Ivan, who accused the two of unlawfully entering his home and alleged that the repeated incidents had made his property unsafe.
According to Ivan, he has experienced several unexplained cases of missing property over recent months. He suspects the losses could be connected to the maid and people who allegedly visited the home without his knowledge. He urged members of the public not to enter his residence unless they have his permission.
He also said the arrest of Mujuni should serve as a warning that anyone found trespassing on his property would face legal action.
Local leaders who responded to the incident said the case reflects growing concerns about theft in the area. Kigaaga Ward councillor Abraham Baryajunwa and Katungu Cell LC1 Chairperson Kamusiime Peace Kamugisha said they had previously received complaints from Ivan about property disappearing from his home without explanation.
The leaders also expressed concern over the increasing number of theft cases involving livestock and other valuable household property within the community.
Although the suspects told police they were in a relationship, officials said their statements contained inconsistencies, raising further questions during the investigation. Police noted that the case being handled is based on allegations of trespassing and unlawful entry into a private residence.
Area councillor Abraham Baryajunwa urged young people to avoid criminal activities and instead focus on productive work. He said local authorities have strengthened community by-laws to help combat rising cases of theft and other offences.
While recording statements at the police station, Kesande Janet and Mujuni Bright reportedly told investigators they had been in a relationship for about a year and claimed they share a child. They asked the complainant to forgive them as investigations into the case continue.
