Police in Kasangati have arrested a bodaboda rider suspected of repeatedly defiling his 13-year-old stepdaughter, leaving her pregnant.
The suspect, Ronald Mayanja, is a motorcycle taxi operator who lives in Lutete village, Nangabo parish, within Kasangati town council in Wakiso district.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokeswoman Racheal Kawala told reporters that Mayanja allegedly abused the girl over a period of months before sending her away after she fell pregnant.
The girl had been living with Mayanja since she was six years old, following the death of her mother. He took her in as her stepfather and was her primary caregiver.
“It is alleged that from about 12 to 13 years, the suspect has been defiling the victim but sent her away after impregnating her,” Kawala said, adding that the matter remains under investigation.
Kawala condemned the abuse in strong terms and said police remain committed to standing up for children.
“We strongly condemn all acts that violate the rights of children and reaffirm our commitment to protecting their safety, dignity and wellbeing,” she said.
