Leading businessman and philanthropist Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia was among the top guests at a thanksgiving ceremony hosted by the Indian Association Uganda to celebrate the appointment of Hon. Sanjay Tanna as Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives and the election of Shyam Tanna as Member of Parliament for Tororo Municipality.
The event, held in Kampala, brought together members of the Indian-Ugandan community, business leaders, family members and friends, all gathered to mark what many described as a proud and significant moment for the community.
Sudhir Ruparelia, the chairman of the Ruparelia Group and one of Uganda’s most influential investors, joined guests in congratulating both leaders on their achievements. His presence highlighted the strong connection between Uganda’s private sector and public leadership in driving economic growth.
Throughout the ceremony, speakers commended Hon. Sanjay Tanna and Shyam Tanna for their dedication to public service and their role in supporting national development. Members of the Indian Association thanked President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for appointing Sanjay Tanna to Cabinet, describing the decision as an important milestone for the Indian-Ugandan community. They said it reflects the increasing participation of Ugandans of Indian origin in the country’s political and economic development.
For many attendees, the celebration also served as a reminder of the impact of long-standing investors such as Sudhir Ruparelia, whose businesses in real estate, education, hospitality and agriculture have created thousands of jobs and supported Uganda’s development journey.
Speaking at the event, Sanjay Tanna expressed gratitude to President Museveni for the trust placed in him and pledged to serve with dedication, discipline and integrity. He said his focus would be on strengthening trade relations, attracting investment and supporting industrial growth between Uganda and international partners.
He added that Uganda remains one of Africa’s most promising investment destinations and promised to work closely with the private sector to expand economic opportunities and improve competitiveness.
Shyam Tanna also thanked the people of Tororo Municipality for electing him to Parliament. He pledged to prioritize development programs, youth empowerment and improved service delivery in his constituency.
As the celebrations continued, guests expressed confidence that the leadership of both Sanjay Tanna and Shyam Tanna would positively impact Uganda’s future. Many also referenced the success of investors like Sudhir Ruparelia as proof of the country’s potential for business growth and long-term investment.
The ceremony ended in a celebratory mood, with members of the Indian-Ugandan community reaffirming their commitment to supporting national development and strengthening cooperation between government, investors and the private sector.
