Police Seize Four Slaughtered Dogs Being Taken to Roadside Meat Market

    By OnionJune 14, 2026

Police in Mubende District have arrested two suspects after intercepting four slaughtered dog carcasses that were allegedly being transported to roadside meat vendors for sale to unsuspecting consumers.

The discovery was made during a routine police patrol in the early hours of Saturday when officers attempted to stop a motorcycle carrying two men and a large polythene bag. According to police, the rider failed to stop at a checkpoint, prompting officers to pursue and arrest both suspects.

A search of the bag reportedly revealed four slaughtered dog carcasses. Investigators then questioned the suspects about where the animals had come from and where they were being taken.

During interrogation, the suspects allegedly admitted that the meat was destined for roadside markets in Mubende Municipality, where it would be sold as roasted goat meat. Police say the suspects further revealed that they had been trapping stray dogs from villages, slaughtering them, and supplying the meat to vendors operating along busy roadside trading centres.

The incident has raised concerns among travellers and residents who frequently purchase roasted meat from roadside markets along the Kampala-Mubende-Fort Portal highway. The route is known for numerous stopover points where motorists buy roasted meat and other food items during long journeys.

Police have detained the suspects as investigations continue to identify and arrest other individuals believed to be involved in the operation. Authorities say additional inquiries are underway to establish the full extent of the alleged network and trace those who may have been receiving and selling the meat.

The suspects are currently being investigated on offences related to animal cruelty and unlawful killing of animals. Police have also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities involving the sale or transportation of meat products.

The seizure comes amid growing concerns about food safety and consumer protection, with authorities warning traders against engaging in illegal practices that could endanger public health.
