The National Drug Authority (NDA) has raided a herbal medicine manufacturing facility in Kampala and arrested two individuals over suspected illegal drug production activities.
The operation was carried out by NDA enforcement officers following intelligence reports that the facility was allegedly producing and distributing herbal products without meeting the required regulatory standards. Authorities say the suspects were found operating a manufacturing line that is now under investigation for possible violations of Uganda’s drug and health regulations.
During the raid, officers reportedly recovered various production materials, packaging equipment, containers, and substances believed to have been used in the manufacture of herbal medicines. Samples were taken for laboratory analysis to determine their composition and safety for public use.
According to the NDA, all medicines and herbal products intended for public consumption must undergo assessment and approval before they can be manufactured, marketed, or distributed. The authority warned that unregulated production poses significant health risks, including contamination, incorrect dosage, and the potential use of unsafe ingredients.
The two suspects were taken into custody to assist with ongoing investigations. Officials have not yet released their identities as inquiries continue into the scale of the operation and whether the products had already reached consumers.
The raid forms part of broader enforcement efforts by the NDA aimed at cracking down on illegal drug manufacturing and unlicensed pharmaceutical activities across the country. In recent years, the regulator has intensified operations against unlawful drug outlets and individuals involved in the unauthorized handling of medicines.
NDA has urged the public to purchase medicines and herbal products only from licensed and approved sources, while encouraging anyone with information about suspected illegal drug activities to report it to the relevant authorities.
