Teacher Arrested For Procuring Fuel For Pupils to Burn School

Aijuka PeterBy Aijuka PeterAugust 2, 2025No Comments1 Min Read

Police in Rubirizi District have detained Andrew Wabyoona, a 30-year-old teacher at Rugazi Central Primary School and resident of Nyungunto village, Magambo Sub-County.

Authorities allege that on July 30 at 11pm, Wabyoona encouraged pupils to set fire to a maize plantation behind the school’s main hall using procured petrol. The fire spread, damaging windows in the headteacher’s and staff offices.

Police quickly responded, extinguishing the fire and preventing further harm to lives and property. The suspect is in custody as investigations continue, with authorities preparing to bring the case to court.

The Greater Bushenyi Police emphasized their commitment to keeping the public informed and condemned acts of violence and lawlessness in schools, highlighting the potential for significant harm. They stated that sufficient evidence would lead to prosecution of those responsible.

Jesca Nantale, the headteacher, claimed Wabyoona incited pupils to strike over the transfer of three teachers. She noted that the pupils did not fully comply with the teacher’s intentions, and school property sustained minimal damage, contrary to some reports.

Nantale reassured parents and stakeholders that the situation has stabilized, with normal classes resuming and school programs, including inter-district games, proceeding as usual.
