KISANJA NO SNORING: Museveni Orders Probe Into Shs231 Billion Veterans’ Appreciation Fund

    By OnionJune 9, 2026

President Yoweri Museveni has ordered an investigation into the management and distribution of Shs231 billion that was allocated as Akasiimo, a special token of appreciation for military veterans.

Speaking during the Heroes’ Day celebrations at State Lodge Nakasero, Museveni said the funds were approved to recognize and reward veterans who participated in the liberation struggle and other military operations that contributed to bringing the current government to power in 1986.

The President expressed concern that despite the government releasing the money over several financial years, many genuine veterans have reportedly not received their payments. He noted that numerous elderly veterans continue to wait for the benefits that were intended to improve their welfare.

Museveni said reports of irregularities in the distribution process had raised serious questions about where the money ended up.

“The money was released to ensure our veterans live a life of dignity, not to enrich a few individuals in offices,” the President said.

He directed that a comprehensive probe be conducted to establish how the Shs231 billion was managed and distributed. The investigation is expected to examine claims of ghost beneficiaries, corruption, and administrative failures that may have affected the payment process.

According to officials, the audit will trace the flow of funds and verify whether the intended beneficiaries received their appreciation packages.

Museveni emphasized that the Akasiimo fund was created as a gesture of gratitude to veterans for their sacrifices and contribution to Uganda’s stability and development. He said those who served the country deserve to receive the support that was approved for them.

The investigation is expected to provide answers on the fate of the billions of shillings and ensure that any officials found responsible for mismanagement are held accountable.
