JUST IN: President Museveni Sacks Senior Officials at Ministry of Works and Transport

President Museveni has reportedly removed at least four senior officials from the Ministry of Works and Transport in a major shake-up aimed at tightening accountability over road infrastructure delivery.

The changes come as the President intensifies pressure on government ministries to improve performance, following persistent concerns over delayed road projects, weak maintenance, and inefficiencies in implementation despite increased funding allocations.

Sources familiar with the developments say the affected officials include senior technocrats within the ministry, with Permanent Secretary Waiswa Bageya also reportedly under review. Government has not officially confirmed the changes.

The move is part of a broader push by the Head of State to enforce stricter performance standards across key sectors, particularly infrastructure, which has faced growing public criticism over stalled and slow-moving projects.

President Museveni has in recent months repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with the state of the country’s road network, warning accounting officers and technical leaders that government will closely track delivery under what he has described as a “term of no sleep” approach focused on results.

Attention has also been drawn to the Busega–Mpigi Expressway, a 23.7-kilometre road project funded by the Government of Uganda and the African Development Bank, after the President raised concerns over inconsistencies in land valuation during compensation for affected property owners.

Construction on the expressway slowed in early 2025 due to funding gaps but later received an additional Shs909 billion approval from the African Development Bank in December 2025 to support completion works.

The reported reshuffle follows earlier adjustments in the Works and Transport docket, including the appointment of Fred Byamukama to Cabinet and the redeployment of Gen Edward Katumba Wamala, as government continues to reorganize leadership in key infrastructure institutions.

By press time, the Presidency had not issued an official comment on the reported dismissals.
