“They Want Me Dead”: Speaker Oboth-Oboth Claims Some People Are Using Witchcraft Against Him

    By OnionJune 30, 2026

Speaker of Parliament Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth has claimed that some people are using witchcraft in an attempt to harm him following his appointment as Speaker of the 12th Parliament.

Speaking during a church confirmation service at Muwafu Primary School in West Budama Central Constituency on Sunday, Oboth-Oboth said he believes there are individuals plotting against his life through supernatural means.

“They want me dead. Those involved in such acts should stop. I believe I am God-made. Those who have tried have failed and will continue to fail,” the Speaker told the congregation.

The service, which was led by the Bishop of Bukedi Diocese, Rt Rev Samuel Bogere Egessa, marked Oboth-Oboth’s first public appearance in his constituency since assuming office as Speaker. Hundreds of residents attended the event to welcome him back home.

The Speaker said he remains confident that God will continue to protect him despite the alleged threats.

He also reflected on his journey from a humble background to becoming Speaker of Parliament, describing his rise as an act of divine intervention.

“I scored aggregate seven and was the second-best student in the district. My parents, who were peasants, could not afford to take me to Majasi High School. To see someone like me become Speaker of Parliament can only be God’s doing,” he said.

Oboth-Oboth urged residents to continue praying for him as he carries out his responsibilities in one of the country’s highest offices.

During the same event, he also called on leaders in Tororo District and the wider Bukedi sub-region to strengthen the fight against corruption, saying dishonest practices continue to undermine service delivery in sectors such as healthcare, education and infrastructure.

Bishop Samuel Bogere Egessa also condemned corruption in his sermon, describing it as a major obstacle to development. He urged public officials to ensure transparency and accountability, particularly in the implementation of government programmes such as the Parish Development Model.

The Speaker also announced that preparations are underway for a thanksgiving ceremony in his constituency to celebrate his appointment. He said President Yoweri Museveni is expected to attend the event as the guest of honour, although the date has not yet been confirmed.
